Let's get it started in here
New email provider, who is this?
Hi! My name’s David Sizemore, and you signed to receive stuff from me at some point in the distant past.
I’ve been pretty terrible at sending emails out at any sort of a regular cadence, but that’s about to change1 . I’ve moved things over to new email provider that’s much simpler and easier to use2 , and I’m excited to get in a more regular cadence of sharing out stuff.
That stuff isn’t necessarily longform essays writing by me. In fact, it probably won’t be that very often, if at all. It’ll be more of a “here’s a bunch of things I ran across on the internet this week, with a brief note meant to coerce you into clicking through to check them out.” Think Roxanne Gay’s Audacious Roundup crossed with Daniel Benneworth-Gray’s Meanwhile, but then ramp down your expectations a couple big notches.
So let’s do it.
Internet Detritus
If you click on one link, make it this one. The most internet-y thing I’ve seen in ages, on multiple levels.
The “I love websites” section. These monoprints are gorgeous. I love this type of site—big, bold, confident. This is a different way to be bold and confident. And this type of site is great, too—fiddly and mildly pretentious. Yes, the cursor effect is the star here, but the way those letters and numbers are cut throughout… chef’s kiss. I shared this with coworkers and called it ‘Winamp as a brand,’ and someone asked me what Winamp was. Feeling old as a rock. Rock. Stripes. Arrows.
The “longer articles” section. Loved this longform, interactive article about making sense of the things a lost brother left behind. The Pudding looked at how voting demographic shifts have changed Rolling Stones’ Greatest Albums of All Time list. And two fascinating articles about hucksters, a man-about-town in NYC and a mansion squatter in LA. As someone screwing up the courage the send their first email newsletter in ages, this level of hubris is astounding. Is it weird to say I’m jealous of that type of confidence?
The “other stuff” section. XOXO is back, one last time. Clicky clicky click click. This video about type on signs is so cleverly done. Would love to stay in this Airbnb in St Paul’s Cathedral’s hidden library. Love the original Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl, and this cover is great.
That’s it! Email length and link types will vary, but I think you get the idea.
I’d love to hear about the fun sites, interesting articles, and beautiful videos you’ve run across lately, too. No pressure, but you can just hit reply and do it. We can be pen pals! It’ll be fun.
See you next week,
Dave
1 Probably!
2 Sorry, place I used to work. I spent too much time thinking about how my emails were going to look, and not enough time writing them. Speaking of emails, simplicity, and the place I used to work—bonus link. RIP, Tinyletter.
